Sparks are expected to fly at the ‘public hearing’ to be held on Friday at the Institute Menezes Braganza under the aegis of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) to discuss the petition filed by the Goa Electricity Department seeking an upward revision of power tariffs in the State.
In its petition, GED has proposed an average 6 per cent hike in tariffs across all categories of consumers, including domestic.
Opposition politicians have slammed the government move, citing the burden on household budgets already facing the pressure of inflationary trends in price movements of essentials.
The GED petition has proposed a tariff hike for three consecutive years “ 2025“26, 2026“27 and 2027“28.
It proposes a 5.95% overall hike in tariffs for the current financial year (2025“26) and a further 5.64% hike in tariffs for 2026“27.
Another 4.88% tariff hike is proposed for FY 2027“28, while there will be no further increases in 2028“29 and 2029“30, according to the petition.
The GED has also filed a 5-year business plan and has sought the JERC’s approval for it alongside the tariff petition.
A second petition, seeking the “true-up” of FY 2023“24 numbers of the GED, will also be discussed and scrutinised at the public hearing on Friday.
