Joint inspection of hydrants carried out at Vasco market

PWD lays pipeline network on all sides of the market

VASCO
Acting on The Goan report, officials from the PWD, fire services and Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) conducted a joint inspection of fire hydrants in the Vasco municipal market on Monday morning.
It may be recalled that The Goan had highlighted the issue of ‘partially' operational fire hydrants in the Vasco market and MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes had assured to conduct a joint inspection on top priority to sort out the long pending issue.
Speaking to The Goan, PWD Assistant Engineer Vishwambar Bhende said the PWD had laid a pipeline network on all sides of the market and had connected hydrants in the market.
"Placing of a pipeline in the market has to be done by the MMC. An old pipeline in the market not been used for years can be checked and if it is in order, we can connect our lines to these pipes so that the network can have water supply and this can work as a temporary solution," said Bhende.
"Since the PWD pipelines have limited water timings, MMC can identify land and build an overhead tank, so that there is 24X7 water supply to the hydrants. We will provide free water to the hydrants for the public cause," added Bhende.
Vasco Station Fire Officer Fransisco Mendes said some hydrants had indicated less water pressure.
"All hydrants will be tested again during midnight when water pressure is good," said Mendes and he also requested the MMC to barricade hydrant valves placed along parking lots of the market.
"We have suggested moving some hydrants from
inside the market premises to the periphery because if the shop near the hydrants catches fire, we cannot use the hydrant."
"We have also suggested an additional hydrant to be placed equidistant from other hydrants along the
periphery of the market. Once we have fire hydrants system in place, it will save our refilling trips and manpower to fight any fire incident," said Mendes.
