Speaking to The Goan, Sukerkar said, “Presently I am in Mumbai for some health check-ups and medical tests. As of now I am contesting. The picture should be clear once I am back by Thursday evening.”
A GSM leader said, “Rajubhai has still not backed out as the Panaji candidate. He is presently gone to Mumbai for medical tests. He will be in Goa tomorrow and we may take a final call on his candidature tomorrow (Thursday) evening.”
Sources, however, informed that GSM’s alliance partner Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) has also been intimated about the incident. MGP too is contemplating on fielding a candidate in Panaji if Sukerkar withdraws from contesting elections.
GSM on Monday had announced Sukerkar’s candidature from Panaji constituency. A close aide of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Sukerkar is considered to be a strong contender for Panaji MLA Sidharth Kuncalienker.
Sources informed that senior BBSM leader Subhash Velingkar on Wednesday informed the party workers in Panaji about Sukerkar’s health. Sources also said that the seat could be given to MGP to contest.
