The Shiv Sena (UBT) on Monday demanded the resignation of Mapusa MLA and Deputy Speaker Joshua D’Souza following allegations made by land grab accused Suleman Siddique Khan. Sena also called for an independent investigation into the land grab case under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
Addressing the media in Mapusa, Sena (UBT) President Jitesh Kamat stated that Suleman’s viral video named only one MLA”Joshua D’Souza”in connection with the case. Kamat asserted that D’Souza should take moral responsibility and resign as both Deputy Speaker and MLA to ensure the investigation remains impartial.
“There is every possibility that Joshua will use his position to influence the investigation,” Kamat said.
Kamat also raised past controversies surrounding the Mapusa MLA. He pointed to allegations about the plotting of Cunchelim comunidade land three years ago and the construction of a car service centre on Mapusa crematorium land, where D’Souza’s role reportedly came under scrutiny. “There should be a thorough probe into all these cases so the truth comes out for the people of Goa,” Kamat said.
When asked whether Siddique’s claims should be taken seriously given his criminal background, Kamat emphasized the principle of presumption of innocence. “He is an accused, not a convicted criminal. His allegations, especially his request to check CCTV footage of the SP’s office, cannot be dismissed outright,” Kamat argued.
He criticized the BJP for dismissing Suleman’s claims on the grounds that he is an accused. “There’s no smoke without fire. Let a proper investigation be conducted under the Supreme Court’s supervision, and the truth will emerge,” he said.
Kamat also slammed the Goa Police for their handling of the case, particularly Suleman’s escape from custody. “The way the accused walked out of the Crime Branch office was so casual, it looked like he was on a ramp walk. This shows how badly law and order has deteriorated in Goa,” he remarked.
Additionally, Kamat accused the BJP of manipulating the majority community by projecting itself as the protector of Hindus. “Some Hindus believe BJP is their savior. In reality, they are using Hindus to remain in power and enjoy its benefits,” he said.
