A journalist with local news channel was allegedly assaulted by three persons, including Prajay Simepurushkar, and threatened over his reporting on a murder case involving a security guard in Siolim early on Sunday.
The complainant, Saiprasad alias Bunty Kubde, told Anjuna police that the incident occurred between 2.45 am and 3.10 am near Siolim Theatre, opposite Kavita Supermarket.
According to the complaint, Simepurushkar, a resident of Guddem, Siolim, and two unidentified men allegedly assaulted Kubde with fists, kicks and a chair, causing simple injuries. They allegedly abused him, restrained and obstructed him when he tried to flee, and threatened him with dire consequences over his journalistic work. Kubde’s friend, Mayur Toraskar, intervened and stopped the assault.
Anjuna police registered a case on October 11 under Sections 115(2), 126(2), 351(2) and 352, read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The accused have not yet been traced or arrested.
GUJ condemns attack
The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) condemned the alleged assault as an attack on press freedom and sought Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s intervention. It demanded an impartial inquiry and urged authorities to bring the accused to justice.
