Leader of Opposition Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar has held the government responsible for the situation that has led many Goans to call for an agitation in the capital city on Monday, saying it was disturbing to see police lathi charge common citizens and injure them.
In a statement issued on Monday on reaching Goa after attending the three-day Congress Maha adhiveshan (Congress Planery Session) at Delhi, Kavlekar said though the government was well aware of the Supreme Court order on closure of mining (dated February 7, 2018), no steps were taken to address issues of mining dependents even after one and half month.
“The negligence of the government towards the mining dependent Goemkars whose daily bread is dependent on mining activity is well seen from this act,” he said.
Looking at video footages through different local news channels and social media, the Opposition leader said it was very disturbing to see police charging on common citizens and injuring them, adding that it was sad to see government taking no action on such act, the interest of Goemkar being not protected.
Considering the alarming situation, Kavlekar has called for an emergency Congress Legislature Party meeting on Tuesday at 3.30 pm in the chamber of the Leader of Opposition, Assembly Complex, to discuss about the failure on part of the government to find solution to the mining issue.
