In a symbolic message, officers and staff of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) got together to put their best foot forward to pass on the message of keeping Mapusa city clean and green even as many open areas in the city were overflowing with garbage.
As part of the "Swacch Bharat, Ek Kadam Swachhta Ke Aur" mission, the council chairman, officers and the staff of Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) organized a rally and carried out a token cleanliness drive in the city on Saturday.

ness drive, MMC Chief Officer Clen Madeira said as part of the third anniversary of Swacch Bharat mission, the civic body will carry out a series of cleanliness activity up to Oct 2 (Gandhi Jayanthi).
"In the week ahead, we will take up ward-wise cleanliness drive and further focus on government offices, public toilets etc," Madeira said.
The chief officer admitted the issue of garbage being dumped in open space around the periphery of the city. He said the council has taken some steps to resolve the problem.
"We have identified some open spaces. We have decided to station a civic staff at each of these open places in areas like near the old Casa Bela, old Asilo hospital, Carraswaddo, Khorlim etc where waste is being dumped. Those who are identified will be penalised," the chief officer said expecting the move to act as deterrent.
MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said the council has done all within its means to lift garbage on time and to keep the surroundings clean.
"We have now started two shifts for garbage collection in the city. Garbage is being lifted twice a day - in the morning and later in the evening," Kavlekar said.
Earlier in the morning, Kavlekar, Madeira, Municipal Engineer Hussain Shah Muzawar and the staff of the Mapusa civic body gathered at the MMC building and later marched through the Mapusa streets around the court junction which finally culminated at the old municipal building.
