Kejriwal backs Azad Maidan Protest, Urges Scrapping of Section 39A

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal has urged BJP led Goa government to abolish the controversial Section 39A of the Town and Country Planning Act.

Speaking at the launch of an e-library in Benaulim, Kejriwal said the provision fosters corruption and that Goans are demanding its removal.

“Section 39A enables widespread corruption by ministers and officials. The people of Goa are fed up. I urge the Chief Minister to scrap it, even if a special assembly session is required,” he said.

The protest, led by St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar, entered its fifth day, pressing for the complete withdrawal of the controversial law, which activists claim allows large-scale land conversions.

Last night, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said all zone-change approvals under Section 39A in St Andre would be put on hold. Borkar, however, dismissed the move as inadequate, insisting the section must be entirely repealed to safeguard Goans’ interests statewide.
