Khaunte polled 11,174 votes and secured a comfortable margin of victory over his nearest rival, Guruprasad Pawaskar of BJP who polled 6,961. The other candidates who hardly made any impact were Rajesh Valvaikar of AAP (846), Rajesh Amonkar of MGP (222), Wilbur Ticlo (144) and Raju D’Souza of Samajwadi Janata Party (133). The NOTA votes were 176.
A jubilant Khaunte claimed that his success was the victory of the people.
“This is the victory of the people. In spite of contesting as an independent, I could win the election because of the confidence people had reposed in me. A lot of allegations were made against me by the BJP during election campaigns but the BJP could not succeed in defeating me.”
“Now, my foremost priority would be to complete the projects which are in the pipeline and make this constituency an ideal one,” said Khaunte.
