There are no instances of child labour taking places either in industries or on beach businesses in the State, according to a written reply given on Thursday at the Monsoon Assembly Session.

The reply was given by former Minister for Labour and Employment Rohan Khaunte to a question asked by Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco.

The Curtorim legislator had asked what steps the government had taken to enforce “The Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 and the Rules.” Khaunte in his reply said that the law was enforced “strictly” by the Inspectorate of the Department.

In reply to whether any raids or surveys were conducted on business and/or industrial establishments in the last one year to check for use of child labour, Khaunte replied that 358 inspections were carried out under the Act, however, no child labour was found to have been employed in any of the industries. Besides, routine inspections, a special survey was conducted to identify the employment of child labour in beach shacks, however, there also it was revealed that no children were found to have been employed. In light of the above, Khaunte said that there had been no instances of prosecution of the culprits as the need had not arisen.
