Children with type-I diabetes will here on be permitted to carry into examination halls their tiffins with mid-day snacks and also their medicines and portable sugar level testing equipment.
The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has in a circular sent to schools asked them to permit their students diagnosed with type-I diabetes to carry their meals and their medical equipment into the examination halls.
The circular has been issued following directives the Board received from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) which acted following numerous petitions from parents of diabetic children and alarming data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimating the world's highest number of children and adolescents with type-I Diabetes Mellitus (IDM) diabetes to be from India.
Those suffering from type-I diabetes need between 3 to 5 insulin shots daily along with an equal number of sugar-level testing. Also disruption of this standard care can affect the child mentally and physically too and could even be fatal sometimes.
“Looking at the current situation, there seems an urgent need or some more efforts to help improve the quality of life of these children” the circular adds.
