Killer roads claim 3 lives at Mollem, Margao and Loutolim

A 31-year-old rider from Collem died in a road mishap when his two-wheeler rammed into a stationary truck on the highway at Mollem on Monday night.

An irate mob later blocked the road and damaged the truck, while the truck driver has been arrested in this connection.

According to reports, the incident took place at about 10.30 pm when Tanvesh Rivankar was riding from Mollem towards Ponda. He did not notice the stationary Karnataka-registered cargo truck which had been parked along with highway for the past two days.

Rivankar’s two-wheeler rammed into the truck and he died on the spot after having sustained grievous injuries. On hearing news of the mishap, a crowd gathered at the site and blocked the highway, while also damaging the truck.

Collem Police Inspector Sagun Sawant and a police team rushed to the site and pacified the irate mob. Police later arrested the truck driver Manjunath Siva Basannavar (31) of Belagavi after conducting a panchanama of the accident.

In the second incident, Allwyn Fernandes from Fatorda died on the spot in self accident at Bolshe Circle, Margao yesterday evening at around 7 pm. In the third incident, an unidentified pedestrian was crushed to death in hit-and-run accident on Loutolim Highway at around 2 am. From the tyre marks police are suspecting that he may have been crushed under the wheels of a heavy vehicle. Police are trying to ascertain the identity of the victim and also search for the vehicle.
