In a little over a month, the killer stretch along the NH17 in Mapusa has claimed another life in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
An unknown man was killed near the Preeti International Hotel on NH17 at around 5 am, Mapusa police informed.
Police sources informed that the man, who appears to be from the labour class, was reportedly crossing the highway when an unknown vehicle knocked him down and ran over him.
Police said that the badly mutilated body indicated that at least two or three vehicles may have run over him after he was knocked down.
It may be recalled a local was killed in similar circumstances on April 21 in the same area.
Shamsunder Anant Naik of Dhargal was then similarly knocked down by an unknown vehicle when he was crossing the highway.
For almost 2 kms the stretch of the highway “ from Bastora junction up to Peddem “  remains in total darkness during the nights as there are no street lights on that stretch of the highway.
Locals crossing the highway run the risk of being run down by vehicles zooming on the road particularly at night.
There is a junction near the Preeti International Hotel on NH17 where vehicles from Gaunsa-vaddo and Camarkhazan have to cross the highway to enter on the other side.
“The present ongoing package to widen the national highways also includes illumination of the stretch. Once the work on widening of the NH17 is completed, work on street lighting will also be taken up,” an official of the PWD (NH) said.
