The government is expected to come out with a scheme for urban kitchen gardening and pot cultivation exclusively for people staying in urban areas from next year.
Agriculture Director Neville Alphonso informed that the department has carried out trials to give a boost to urban kitchen gardening and pot cultivation in the urban areas.
“So far, trials have been conducted in the last two years and the trials for the third year have begun. We will assess the results next year in May after which the government will work out a subsidized scheme to promote kitchen garden and pot cultivation in urban areas,” he said. Alphonso said people will be trained in cultivating vegetables in pots in apartments and bungalows by creating awareness on how they can use the terrace space to promote kitchen gardening.
“We have been conducting trials of the concept for the last two years. The third-year results will be assessed in May next year after which a subsidy scheme will be worked out for urban kitchen garden and pot cultivation in the urban areas,” he said, adding that the department will shoulder the responsibility of creating awareness and imparting training on the concepts of kitchen gardening and pot cultivation.
