The Konnsachem Fest 2025 marked a historic 400-year jubilee since the foundation of the Old Church of St Bartholomeu in Chicalim.

The day was a blend of faith, heritage, and community spirit, with celebrations split into a morning of solemn tradition and an evening of joyful community games.

The event began with a grand procession from St Francis Xavier Church to a local field belonging to a Hindu farmer Shashikant Usgaonkar and cultivated by the Chicalim Youth Farmers Club.

Leading the procession were parish leaders, including Parish Priest Fr Bolmax Pereira, Fr Francis Pereira, and South Goa MP Capt. Viriato Fernandes, who attended as a parishioner.

Fr Bolmax blessed the fields and cut the first paddy grain (Konnos), a traditional act at the heart of the fest.

The procession then continued to the ruins of the Old Church of St Bartholomeu, where a new statue of St Bartholomeu was permanently installed. For the first time in 278 years, public Mass was celebrated at the ruins, reminding everyone of the parish's 400-year faith journey. The morning concluded with tea and snacks for all participants.

The evening was a lively affair with games and activities for all ages.

The festivities were opened with a prayer by coordinator Stefanie Lucas, with chief guest Filipina Cardozo, the mother of Fr Bolmax Pereira, in attendance.

Sector-based competitions encouraged teamwork and community spirit. A highlight was the traditional Coconut Breaking competition, organised by the Chicalim Sports Club, which featured a playful twist as the priests broke the first coconut.

MC Valerie guided the participants through the games, while DJ Steven provided music, filling the grounds with dancing rhythms. Naquelim Sector emerged as the overall winner, retaining their trophy from the previous year. The evening concluded with a vote of thanks from the parish youth, who also responsibly cleaned the entire venue.

“The Konnsachem Fest 2025 was a perfect celebration, uniting the community in faith and fun. The morning's solemn rituals honoured the parish's roots and the hard work of farmers, while the evening’s games and music fostered a sense of togetherness,” said Fr Bolmax.

“This historic celebration of the St Bartholomeu Church's 400-year legacy reminded all of the rich tradition, cultural heritage, and unity of the community, creating cherished memories for years to come.”
