Funday marks Goenkarponn in the Netherlands

PANAJI

The Goan community in the Netherlands came together for a Funday, a day of fun, food, and fellowship at the beautiful Stadswandelpark, Eindhoven on August 23.

This gathering was organised with the intention to bring Goans together, celebrate their roots, and create happy memories far from home.

"Around 40 Goans, families and friends, young and old, all bringing energy, laughter, and warmth were present at the Funday. It was a day to remind ourselves that Goenkarponn (the Goan spirit of unity) thrives wherever Goans come together," said Debbie Fernandes, who took the initiative to organise the event.

"It was a true community effort, as the event was beautifully supported and encouraged by many Goans who stepped in to help with planning, food, games, and arrangements."

THE ACTIVITIES

The day was filled with lively Goan khell (games) that had everyone participating with smiles and cheers. The games included Passing the Watermelon, dumb charades, Dog and the Bone, Housie (Bingo), and other games with spot prizes.

The Funday included Goan homemade snacks and food, with everyone bringing along something from their kitchens.

"Together, we shared snacks, meals, drinks, and sweet treats, just like a true Goan Somudai (Small Christian Community) celebration," said Debbie.

THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Debbie said the day was made special not just for the games, prizes, or the food, but the feeling of Ekvott (togetherness).

“I just wanted to see us all together, laughing and enjoying. I’m so happy we could make this happen – and this is only the beginning of many more gatherings," said Debbie.

"Standing side by side, singing, eating, and laughing reminded us that though far away from Goa, our roots remain strong and our culture lives on."

"A heartfelt Dev Borem Korum to everyone who made this event possible – by bringing food, sharing ideas, volunteering, and simply being there with their energy and smiles.

"And to all Goans in the Netherlands who may be reading this – we warmly welcome you to join us next time. More the merrier! Let’s continue to grow this little Goan family abroad. Ami sogllim eke – together, we keep the Goan spirit alive," Debbie added.

Added another volunteer: “The joy on the faces of children during the games was the best reward. This is what community is all about.”
