The Goan Association of Calgary (GAC) proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary with a four-day program of events held from August 1–4, marking a historic milestone in the Association’s journey.
“The golden jubilee festivities positioned GAC among the leading Goan organisations worldwide, underscoring its dedication to community building, cultural preservation, and youth engagement,” said GAC President Vicki D’Souza.
Centred on four core pillars — Education, Sports, Culture, and Community — the celebrations were designed to expand membership, nurture local talent, and strengthen bonds across generations, she added.
The celebrations began on August 1 with a Thanksgiving Mass followed by a Meet & Greet in the Church Hall—a moment for reflection and reconnection.
On August 2, adults were invited to Cheers & Beers at Stonewall Pub—an afternoon of games, snacks, and fellowship in a relaxed social setting.
All roads then led to the GAC Golden Gala on August 3, with the signature event of the year featuring a fusion-style dinner, with our DJ & Live Band ‘Blackjacks’.
The long weekend wrapped up on August 4 with ‘Susegad, Sports & Sunshine’, a family-friendly outdoor celebration with food, games, and laid-back Goan charm at the Montgomery Community Centre.
“The events reflected the Goan spirit through music, dance, cuisine, and a shared sense of heritage, demonstrating the Association’s ability to unite the Goan community in Calgary while fostering connections with Goan associations across Canada and globally,” said Vicki.
She attributed the success of the celebrations to the dedication of the management team.
“Under tight timelines, the team curated a programme of exceptional quality,” said Vicki.
She also ensured collaboration by inviting community leaders from Calgary and across Canada to contribute ideas, resources, and financial support from the early stages of planning through to execution.
“Their combined efforts created a memorable celebration and a lasting legacy for future generations,” acknowledged Vicki.
“As GAC looks ahead to the next 50 years, the mission remains rooted in community, culture, and connection. What began in 1975 as a small initiative to preserve Goan identity in a new land has blossomed into a vibrant community that honours its roots while embracing its future.”
“The Goan Association of Calgary extends a warm invitation to new members, friends, and families to join and contribute to the Association’s ongoing mission of community growth and cultural enrichment. Viva Goa!”
