Taking cognizance of the death of a labourer in the ammonia gas leakage tragedy at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, Labour Minister Jennifer Monserrate has promised to order a probe to find out whether labourers are being accommodated in makeshift structures inside the industrial units.
The minister pointed out that she would ask the Labour Department to order an inquiry into the Cuncolim Industrial Estate incident since the deceased labourer was found sleeping in makeshift accommodation in an adjoining unit.
When The Goan drew her attention to the complaints pouring from Cuncolkars over large scale conversion of factory premises to house labourers, the Labour Minister said she would order a detailed probe into the issue.
“Certainly, I will ask the Labour Department officials to conduct an inquiry and file a report on whether industrial workers are illegally housed in the units,” she said.
The 22-year-year old Labourer from Uttar Pradesh, who was sleeping in a residential room in the Tap Tools unit, had died following the leakage of ammonia gas in the adjoining Quality Foods unit, raising serious questions on the safety of workers as well as their accommodation in industrial units.
