Lady falls prey to Smart City mess, fractures hand

PANAJI

A lady senior citizen residing in the St Inez-Tonca area had a fall and fractured her hand after a plank stationed by the 'Smart City' contractor broke.

Residents of the area have raised a hue and cry over the incident questioning the shoddy implementation of the work and lack of safety measures on work sites.

The area is part of the Taleigao constituency and AAP leader Cecille Rodrigues, who accompanied the residents at a media briefing on Saturday, has demanded accountability from the authorities.

"It is a shame that the mayor, the MLAs and local corporators are not voicing the concerns of the people and alleviating their problems related to the ongoing work," Rodrigues said, adding that the St Inez Road alongside the Caculo Mall has been a mess for over two years.

Yet they have dug up the Madhuban Complex road which has endangered life and cause injuries to so many people apart from badly affecting local businessmen," Rodrigues said, adding that those in government and power, are doing nothing while people suffer.

Meanwhile, Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) has in a statement expressed regret over the incident and admitted that safety measures and protocols were not followed by the contractor at this specific site.

"The contractor had been instructed to follow all safety measures and protocols at the site which wasn’t done. We are fully collaborating with the authorities and the police in their ongoing investigation," IPSDCL, statement said, adding that safety of citizens is utmost priority.

It also said that IPSCDL is committed to ensuring that ongoing development work causes least inconvenience to the public.
