Endoscopic surgeon at Lakeview Hospital Dr Ravi B Patil and his team have saved life of a senior citizen by successfully carrying out a highly complex liver surgery.
The 78-year-old woman was suffering from severe liver complications due to Klatskin's tumour has now recovered and has been discharged.
Giving details about the surgery, Dr Ravi Patil said the patient had a tumour growing in the bile duct at the junction of right and left part of the liver, called Klatskin's tumor.
“This causes a blockage of the bile flow and the patient will have jaundice and liver failure if left untreated.
"We carried out ERCP guided Double Duct Metal stenting for her. It is a very complicated and technically demanding surgery. The first task is to restore the bile flow. In this case we had to put a guide wire on both the sides of the liver across the tumour just like they do in a by-pass and then put a self expanding metal stent,” by ERCP procedure, Dr Patil told The Goan.
According to doctors at the Lakeview hospital, this is a highly complicated procedure and was never done in Belagavi before, compelling such patients to go to Hyderabad, Bengaluru and other metros for this surgery.
“They had to spend over Rs 7-8 lakh for the same and involves extensive travelling and other costs and no guarantee of survival,” Dr Patil said.
“But with our expertise, experience and our team, we have successfully carried out this endoscopic surgery and cured the woman who was suffering for a long time.”
“Moreover, due to Covid, the family did not want to travel and hence, we took up the challenge and I am happy to carry out this surgery. The patient was hospitalised for only two days and is relieved of all her symptoms,” Dr Patil added.
The efforts of Dr Ravi Patil and his team have been lauded in the medical fraternity and across Belagavi. Family members of the patient have also expressed gratitude to the Lakeview team.
