A car belonging to the parish priest and the garage at Sts Cosme and Damian Church in Bogmalo were damaged when a large boulder came crashing down following a landslide in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Sources said the incident occurred at around 2 am and fortunately there was no loss or injury to life in the incident.
Speaking to reporters, Fr Theo Fernandes said besides his car, the garage behind the church and some church equipment were damaged in the incident.
"When I got up in the morning, I saw huge boulders which had come down from a hillock. The Talathi has already arrived to assess the losses," said Fr Fernandes.
Bogmalo Sarpanch Sankalp Mahale said the panchayat would take up the issue of having a retaining wall in the area.
"A Church is a place of religious gathering especially on Sundays and landslides in and around the Church area could be dangerous. We have witnessed a landslide for the first time and we assume it is because of incessant rains,” said Mahale.
“As of now, we are clearing the area of the boulders and assessing the damage caused and to offer immediate help through the disaster management. We request the government to immediately take up a retaining wall in the area so that such dangerous incidents can be prevented in the future," said Mahale.
