Leopards foray for prey in Agonda goes in vain

Leopards foray for prey in Agonda goes in vain
Two leopards who made attempts early Sunday to attack a dog in a caged dog-house were caught on CCTV cameras at Betulwada, Agonda.

CANACONA

It's nothing unusual at least in Agonda for leopards attacking and taking away domestic animals, but interestingly these two leopards found themselves very unsuccessful at catching their prey despite it being in plain sight.

In the wee hours of May Day, two leopards were seen desperately trying to catch and take away a dog outside a residential house at Agonda.

The dog that was tied in front of the house but had been secured inside a caged dog-house proved an unlucky prey to the ferociously charging leopards.

Infact, the entire sequence where the two adult leopards are seen walking menacingly on the road in front of the residential houses is caught on different CCTV cameras. While the first one proceeds towards the house entrance  (just outside the house courtyard ) and it attempts to pounce on a dog sleeping peacefully inside a dog house. The dog however is seen waking up suddenly and beginning to bark violently even as the leopard put its claws through the iron cage to catch hold of the dog.

As the dog continues to bark violently and after frequent failed attempts, the leopard gives up and is seen slowly joining the other leopard), who was waiting back on the street, and both were seen walking away. The wild cats were however later seen sitting on the street.

This incident caught on different CCTV cameras from 02.15 hrs onwards, saw them still sitting on the road, as if expecting their next prey anytime.

Off late, many of the residents have complained of missing pets, besides losing livestock of pigs and fowls to leopards.

At night, people have also noticed leopards resting in house verandahs and leaving just before day break, besides attacking and lifting their pets.

Incidentally, fearing attacks on humans, some of the residents have requested the Forest department to trap leopards roaming in residential localities and secure them.
