Several portions of the walkway along CHOGM road in Porvorim have been occupied by hawkers, beggars and a few migrant workers along with a few stray dogs who have dirtied the place with their cooking, and leftover food and defecation, making it nauseating for morning walkers and pedestrians.
A few of them have even made it their home, sleeping overnight in railway platform style. This has been going on since the past few months and it appears that nothing can be done to rectify the situation despite having 2 village panchayats in Porvorim -- Socorro and Pilerne panchayats.
Public hygiene is now abysmal since the buck of responsibility is conveniently passed on, every time a complaint is made to the panch members.
Panchayat elections are round the corner and there is more buzz and concern among panch contestants over getting elected, than fulfilling earlier promises of public hygiene and cleanliness of the village.
In such a scenario what hopes do the residents of the area have of enjoying a pollution-free environment?
