The Food and Drugs Administration revoked the licence of a Self-Help Group (SHG) supplying mid-day meals to over 900 students in nine schools at Dhave-Nagargao in Sattari, after the SHG was found
operating in unhygienic conditions.
Director of Education Gajanan Bhat has informed The Goan that alternate arrangements have been done to provide meals to the nine schools from Tuesday itself.
The FDA officials paid a surprise visit to inspect the kitchen of SHGs supplying mid-day meals in Sattari taluka. Bhumika SHG in Dhave, which is about 12 kms from Valpoi town, was caught unawares by the raid.
According to Valpoi Assistant Education Officer, Gawade, Bhumika SHG has been supplying mid-day meals to 932 students from nine schools in Sattari taluka.
During the inspection, the FDA officials raised concern over unhygienic condition of the kitchen and issued a notice to it to stop operating and also revoked the license to supply mid-day meals.
"Acting on instructions of the FDA, all nine primary and middle schools have been directed not to accept mid-day meals from Bhumika SHG," said Gawade.
When contacted, FDA Director Salim Velji said the inspection was a part of regular checks on mid-day meals prepared in the kitchens of SHGs.
"Such surprise checks will continue to ensure that the scheme is on the right track. There was a complaint from locals regarding unhygienic conditions at the kitchen of this group. We have directed Bhumika SHG to fulfil the norms of FDA and local health guidelines," he said.
"Nothing has been seized, but we have directed
this SHG to immediately stop the kitchen and also the supply of mid-day meals," Velji added.
