A lamp lit for worship led to a fire in a flat on Monday, prompting fire officials to appeal to people to exercise caution while lighting lamps at altars or other places of worship in homes.
According to reports, a flat on the second floor of Shalom Apartment at New Vaddem caught fire on Monday morning.
Fire brigade rushed to the site and doused the fire before it could spread through the entire house and the surrounding flats thus averting a major tragedy.
According to information from the sources, a burning lamp (diya) fell on the bed setting it ablaze.
Thanks to the timely arrival of the fire brigade, additional losses were prevented as fire fighters doused the fire before it could spread to other parts of the house.
“The cause of fire was a lit diya in the bedroom. I appeal to people to be careful while lighting diyas in front of religious idols,” said Vasco Fire Officer Vivekanand Bhaatkar.
“The loss was curtailed to Rs 6,000-8,000 as only the bed and mattress was on fire when the fire brigade reached the site,” Bhaatkar added.
