Rising sea water has hit the erection of the shacks along the  Betalbatim-Majorda-Utorda stretch, with locals saying the government  should take steps to get the shacks little behind on the shore instead  of allowing the temporary structures to come up right near the sea  water.

As the season of shack erection has begun ahead of the new  tourism season, a couple of shacks had to face the nature’s fury when  their stands and wooden planks used in the shacks were washed away by  the sea incursion.

A local resident Marcus D’Souza told the media on  Tuesday that the Tourism department ought to have carried out a study  before taking the decision on the location of the shacks on the  Betalbatim-Majorda-Utorda shore. “On this beach stretch, the shacks are  set up close to the sea. One of the shack owners found his wooden plank  and stands washed into the sea. Even the stage/platform erected inside  the shack faces the threat by the rising sea water,” he said.

Marcus  said the Tourism department should understand the ground reality on the  beach belt, saying the situation does not augur well for the foreign  tourists, patronising the beach shacks. “Just imagine a situation when  the sea water rises when the guests are holed up in the shacks. Such a  situation will only paint a negative picture of Goa tourism,” he said.

While  calling up the government to ensure that the shacks are allowed to be  erected little behind along the beach belt, Marcus demanded to know  whether the Tourism department had conducted any study of the ground  reality before mandating the shack owners to erect the temporary structures right  near the water.

Incidentally, when the beach belt was inundated by  rising sea water during the last season, the Betalbatim-Majorda-Utorda  beach belt had borne the brunt of nature’s fury, leaving the shack  owners with heavy losses and destruction of property.

“When the  rising sea water is an annual phenomenon along the  Betalbatim-Majorda-Utorda beach belt, the Tourism department ought to  have checked the ground situation before marking the area on the beach  for the erection of temporary structures,” he added.WHAT THE SHACK OWNER SAYS
