The Agonda panchayat on Tuesday began the work to chop down or trim many trees obstructing traffic along the village road.
Agonda Sarpanch Pramod Phaldessai said the panchayat had presented a report to the deputy collector under disaster management, identifying about 30 trees which posed a threat to motorists.
The forest department inspected the route from Dumane to Parvem, before approving the work to either chop down or trim the trees by the roadside.
About 20 other trees on the route coming under the jurisdiction of Agonda panchayat will also be taken up for trimming of cutting, depending on the need, the sarpanch said.
The sarpanch said extreme care has been taken to cut down only those trees which endanger human lives.
“In most cases, branches have been cut and trimmed,” said Phaldessai.
“A huge, but old pipal tree lying dangerously by the roadside along the busy Parvem bazaar area of Agonda village will also be felled. However, the tree will be felled only after taking all precautionary measures as high tension and distribution power lines are located close to the tree,” Phaldessai added.
