One crew member died and seven others were rescued while a barge loaded with iron ore sank in the sea as cargo was being unloaded from a ship at the Mooring Dolphin area of Mormugao port on Monday night.
According to sources at MPT, the barge developed a crack while the cargo of iron ore fines was being discharged and sank in the sea at around 9 pm.
“There were around eight crew on board. Rescue operations began immediately and all crew members were rescued. One crew member was unconscious and another was injured. Both were shifted from the MPT to the Chicalim Sub District Hospital for treatment.”
“The unconscious crew member breathed his last, while the other crew member is out of danger. The other six crew members were unhurt," said the source.
