Congress MLA Reginaldo Lourenco has said that it is disheartening to note that Assembly Deputy Speaker Michael Lobo has referred the Kerala floods not as a human tragedy but a natural one despite the warnings issued by famed environmentalist Madhav Gadgil along with many other experts that Goa would be next in line for facing a similar recent rain catastrophe like Kerala.

“I want to remind Michael Lobo and the BJP that Madhav Gadgil’s well researched study connected with the Western Ghats has blamed the government at the Centre for bypassing the National Green Tribunal and has clearly warned brazen mining activity of Goa could be devastating for the State,” he said.

He demanded to know from Lobo why he had gone into deep slumber that has been unleased on Goa by the central and State governments ruled by the BJP. “For how long will Lobo and his other party MLAs remain mute spectators to the environment destructions caused in Goa by flattening of hills, destruction of trees, encroachment of water bodies, etc,” he asked.

Reginaldo said that Goemkars are really pained by Lobo’s statement that incessant rains has been the cause behind the tragedy in Kerala. “People of Goa would like to remind that Goa is not far away from the impending disaster because it shares with its southern counterpart a similar topography and a similar climate. The Kerala rain devastation is a stark reminder that human greed obsession to take over nature will result into unimaginable environmental disaster,”

he added.
