Training his guns against “corrupt” bureaucrats, Deputy Speaker and Calangute MLA, Michael Lobo said that these officials should be “suspended” and sent to jail for amassing wealth disproportionate to their known source of income.
“There are certain government officers who have managed to stick to the same position for several years. They are synonymous with corruption. These people must be punished. They have to go behind bars because they have assets disproportionate to their known source of income,” Lobo said without naming the officers.
The deputy speaker was speaking to the media on the sidelines of an inaugural function along the Calangute beach belt late Monday evening.
Lobo said demanded strict action on such insensitive officers who failed to understand the needs of Goans.
“The chief minister has to take some strict decision to suspend some senior government officers who are lethargic, do not care for people of Goa and don’t understand that tourism industry as 60 percent of Goans sustain on it,” he said.
Upset with the decision of the tourism department to go ahead and float a tender for beach cleaning, the Calangute MLA said that the tender was made to favour one individual and blamed a senior bureaucrat for the mess.
“The tender is tailor-made and it smells of corruption. I will see that either crime branch or SIT (special investigation team) is formed to investigate these officers,” he said.
Stating that he will write to the chief secretary to check the assets of certain officers, Lobo said he will also write to the crime branch and the Lokayukta for a probe against them.
“I am warning them to take VRS (voluntary retirement scheme) and go home or be ready to face music. There are some department heads in our administration, who have remained too long in the same position,” he said.
It may be recalled the Calangute MLA in the past had made serious allegations against police officers vis-Ã -vis their allegiance with drug dealers and even threatened to reveal their names but never kept his promise.
