Residents from Vagator and neighbouring villages in North Goa like Assagao, Anjuna and Siolim faced the brunt of the pressure on infrastructure due to the 3-day Sunburn Klassique Electronic Dance Music festival which concluded on Sunday.
There were huge traffic jams even on the internal village roads during the three days of the festival held from December 26 to 29.
Huge lines of vehicles were seen along Siolim-Calangute road where traffic normally flows smoothly.
Due to sudden increase in electricity consumption, the power department reportedly resorted to load-shedding and residents complained of constant fluctuations in their areas.
“The EDM festival causes serious problems. Traffic jams, speeding vehicles, rash driving, alleged drug abuse, alcohol abuse raises questions of whether it is really required in Goa. Do Goan youth benefit from such tourism or can there be other avenues,” asked Amol Nadkarni a villager from Assagao.
A businessmen Pangam from Siolim, irritated by the traffic jams said EDMs do not provide any business to locals. Only the mushrooming hotels which are not owned by locals are benefiting from this type of tourism.
