There was suspense over whether the State government will extend the 50 per-cent cut in new vehicle registration rates beyond the December 31 deadline.

Although Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho said the government will extend the 50 per-cent exemption in registration fees, the notification for the same has not been issued till date.

“We have not received any notification yet,” said Goa Automobile Dealers Association President Prashant Joshi.

Joshi claimed that after the government decision, there is an increase in sales of vehicles by 40 per cent.

The dealers have demanded to increase the tax exemption period. To boost demand in the auto sector battling downturn, the Goa government on October 9 had announced slashing of road tax by 50 per cent on the purchase of any type of new vehicle for a period of three months, till December 31.

Meanwhile, in December first week Godhinho has said that the registration period will be increased by another 9 days in January but the notification for the same has not been issued till day.

Earlier the cabinet had overruled the Finance Secretary’s remark to oppose such exemption and has given its nod to reduce the road tax by 50 per cent.
