Cops nab 8, recover 62 phones stolen from EDM venue

In a major breakthrough, North Goa police nabbed eight persons in two separate incidents and recovered 62 mobile phones stolen from people attending the three-day Sunburn Festival which ended on Sunday.   

According to Calangute police, the accused -- Waseem Ahmed (28), Mohammad Jamil (29), Aneesh Suleman (50) and Lal Mohammad (40), all from New Delhi -- allegedly stole mobiles from people attending the Sunburn festival on December 28 and 29.   

They are a part of a gang who came to Goa to steal mobiles from tourists at the Sunburn festival and were residing at a guest house near the Calangute football ground.   

Calangute Police recovered 54 mobile phones worth Rs 10 lakh, police added.   

Suleman and Mohammad were first picked up by police from the Tito’s lane and they later disclosed the involvement of Ahmed and Jamil.   

The four accused were later arrested by a Calangute Police Team led by PI Nolasco Raposo and comprising PSI Viraj Naik, Police Constables Vinay Srivastav, Suresh Naik, Rahul Ramnavar and Vinod Naik.   

In the second incident, Anjuna police arrested Atik Rehman (30) of New Delhi, Zahir Sheikh (24) of Mumbai, Soheil Memon (29) of Thane and Imran Sheikh (27) of Mumbai and eight stolen mobile phones worth Rs 2 lakh were recovered from them.   

Police said all eight accused had come to Goa on December 27 and had planned to stay till January 1. The Anjuna police team was headed by PI Suraj Gawas and PSI Sujay Korgaonkar.   

Further investigation is being carried out under the supervision of Porvorim SDPO Edwin Colaco and North Goa SP Utkrisht Prasoon.
