Chief Minister Pramod Sawant took to social media platform Twitter to denounce criticism and opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) accusing the Opposition of lying about the law which has prompted widespread protests across the country.
In several tweets posted by him, Sawant said Indian citizens of any religion did not have to fear CAA and accused the Opposition parties of spreading canards about CAA that it would target Muslims and strip them of citizenship.
“Indians belonging to any religion need not worry at all, either about the CAA or NRC,” said one tweet Sawant posted on his verified handle. He said, the CAA proposes to give citizenship to refugees from the three neighbouring countries of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who had centuries of cultural affinity with Indian ethos.
In another tweet, he alleged that the opposition was spreading lies for vote-bank politics in a desperate attempt to instil fear among Muslims.
“CAA categorically addresses concerns of minorities of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Members of the majority community in these countries who want to apply for Indian citizenship will still be able to, as per the existing provisions of Indian citizenship,” Sawant said in his tweets.
A few days ago, Sawant had said on the sidelines of a Christmas function in Bardez that NRC may not be required at all in Goa after a number of protests against the Central legislations. He later backtracked on his remarks.
