VASCO
Residents of many buildings along the busy F L Gomes road in Vasco have complained that their buildings have begun to vibrate when heavy vehicles pass over an uneven stretch of the road.
Claiming that the development has been recent after substandard work by the PWD to patch the road, the aggrieved residents have demanded that the PWD redo the entire work on the road so that there is no uneven surface left.
Residents have expressed fear as the intensity of vibrations increases at night when several trucks and other heavy vehicles move along the road to and from the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT).
Speaking to reporters, Vikram Sarmalkar, an affected resident and social activist, said for the past several days, he and his family have had sleepless nights due to the vibrations.
“The uneven potholed road is right in front of my house. It all began a few days back when a portion of the road began to sink. I tried drawing the attention of authorities, but no one cared till someone fell off his bike one night and was seriously injured.”
“The next morning, we saw that the small sinking portion was barricaded. The PWD came and patched up the surface, but they did a shoddy job and further damaged the road,” said Sarmalkar.
“I have been living here for 40 years, but we have never felt such horrible vibrations. Now, every time a speeding vehicles goes over the uneven road surface, our building starts to vibrate. The bigger the bump and faster the vehicle, the greater is the intensity of the vibrations. The PWD must get the road levelled immediately,” Sarmalkar added.
Meanwhile, several aggrieved residents in the area have highlighted the issue on social media, expressing anger and demanding that the PWD immediately repair the road and level the surface.
When contacted, a source in the PWD said there were plans to hot mix major roads in Vasco within the next two months.
