With open drinking and vehicular parking on the Cavelossim-Assolna bridge being the order of the day, the Cavelossim gram sabha on Sunday has resolved to install “no parking and no drinking” sign boards on the bridge.
The gram sabha chaired by sarpanch Dennis Dias discussed a host of issues, including the Coastal Zone Management Plan, delay in the construction of the training wall at river Sal mouth, open defecation by migrants and other issues.
Gram sabha member Dixon Vaz drew attention to the issue of open drinking and vehicular parking on the Cavelossim-Assolna bridge, saying the situation is not only causing nuisance to the motorists, but may result in accidents. It was also resolved to write to the PWD to take up periodic maintenance of the bridge. The gram sabha further resolved to write to the RTO, Colva and Cuncolim police regarding the issue.
Some of the gram sabha members also raised the issue over a temporary jetty coming up at the old Cavelossim ferry point. With the Captain of Ports and the River Navigation department granting NOC, on the basis of a lease of ferry ramp, to operate a cruise boat, the gram sabha opposed the activity while resolving to ask the authorities not to renew the lease as the ferry ramp may come useful for the villages in times of disasters and emergencies.
With the village panchayat already submitting a detailed report on the demands of the villagers, the sarpanch has promised all support to the villagers to put their demands into a plan that will be drawn up with the help of experts before submitting the same to the GCZMA, state environment ministry and the Chennai-based agency. The sarpanch informed that the 2011 and 2019 CRZ notifications have provided some relief to the locals and fishing community.
The sarpanch informed that a joint inspection carried out by the Primary Health Centre, BDO and panchayat had revealed that both the two fisheries units had installed five and three toilets respectively. The sarpanch has constituted a special vigilance committee to tackle the open defecation issue, further informing that toilet blocks will be placed at the beach areas. The non-functioning street lights raised an uproar at the meeting and it was finally resolved to write to the Power Minister.
