A large number of people from Bhironda-Sattari taluka marched to the Valpoi police station demanding action against visitors causing nuisance at the Bhironda river on Wednesday.
The locals threatened to launch an agitation if the Valpoi police did not take any action in the matter within two days.
According to sources, some youth from different parts of the state had visited the Bhironda river on Wednesday afternoon, and were found consuming alcohol and washing their vehicles in the river.
The locals requested them to avoid polluting the river, however the visitors ignored their requests and had an argument with the locals.
There were allegations that some intoxicated youth had also assaulted the locals. When this news spread across the village, the visitors fled from the spot.
The angry locals then marched to the Valpoi Police Station demanding action against the visitors who had caused a nuisance on Wednesday.
Despite efforts, Valpoi police were unable to locate the visitors till late Wednesday night and the locals then set an ultimatum of two days to locate the visitors, failing which they would stage a protest at the police station.
Later, speaking to reporters, a local Patrick Andrade said there had been a long-pending demand to stop visitors from causing nuisance at the Bhironda river, after many visitors were found consuming alcohol and misbehaving with the villagers.
“However, authorities have been least bothered to take action against the visitors causing a nuisance. We have also requested the Bhironda panchayat to take actions and permanently stop visitors at the river,” Andrade said.
