Villagers at the gram sabha in Socorro on Sunday raised objections to the proposed truck terminus in the Socorro fields.
The meeting took place at the village panchayat hall, where Sarpanch Soniya Pednekar welcomed the attendees. Panchayat Secretary Satish Gawas read the minutes from the previous gram sabha, held on 12th January 2025.
Discussions covered several issues, including the truck terminus, a multipurpose sports complex, and the digging of internal roads for underground cables.
Wilbur Ticlo spoke about the government’s plan to set up a truck terminus in Socorro’s fields. He warned that the area would look untidy if the terminus was built. He pointed out that fields already have several shops, a sewage treatment plant, and a petrol pump. He also raised concerns about drainage, stating that water would stagnate and flood the fields and service road during the monsoon. After further discussion, a resolution was passed to object to the truck terminus.
Villagers also raised the issue of the sports complex, which has been under construction for 13 years. They asked when the project would be completed. Sarpanch Pednekar could not give a specific timeline, but Secretary Satish Gawas stated that 90% of the work was done, and the remaining work would be finished soon.
Sorter D’Souza and D Bhobe raised concerns about the lack of a proper schedule for digging roads to lay underground electric cables. They suggested that the electricity department should notify villagers in advance about which areas would be dug up and when, and which roads would be closed. Sarpanch Pednekar promised to arrange a meeting with the electricity department to set a clear schedule for the work.
Finally, a resolution on “One Nation, One Election” was adopted unanimously.
