Tension flared up in Ona village of Maulinguem panchayat on Monday morning when angry locals opposed a team conducting a survey of houses in Maulinguem village under police protection.
Mayem MLA Premendra Shet later intervened in the matter to defuse the tension. According to sources, a survey team led by the Mamlatdar and Talathi had gone to Ona village to conduct a survey of houses, to comply with a court order.
The villagers, who were taken aback over the sudden arrival of officials without prior notice, protested strongly and questioned the authority of officials to conduct the survey without informing them.
The situation was tense, as the locals confronted the survey team in the presence of a large police presence.
Local MLA Premendra Shet rushed to the site to intervene in the matter. He assured the villagers that he would stand by them and would offer legal support.
Satisfied with his assurance, the villagers dispersed from the site. The survey was postponed, and the officials were sent back. The issue is slated to come up for hearing in the High Court on August 13.
