Residents of three villages in Sattari taluka took part in a cleanliness drive along with activists of the NGO Vanashakti and staff of Mhadei wildlife sanctuary, as part of a pledge to keep the area clean and to preserve the environment.
Residents of Satre, Kodal and Derode, three villages in a remote part of Sattari taluka along with Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary Range Forest Officer Prakash Salelkar, his staff and members of the NGO Vanashakti conducted the cleanliness drive.
Salelkar appealed to villagers to segregate wet and dry garbage, while cloth bags were distributed to each house. He said wet garbage can be put in trenches behind the house, while dry garbage can be collected in cloth bags, which would be collected as and when required. He said this practice would help conserve nature and protect the environment.
Residents from the three villages supported the initiative enthusiastically and pledged to devote their time to make the three villages garbage-free.
Later speaking to reporters, Salelkar said, “This was a unique drive by residents villages to make their villages garbage-free all and cloth bags were distributed to all houses.... they have been informed about segregating wet and dry garbage, while dry garbage will be collected and sent to the garbage treatment plant in Saligao.”
