A group of locals from Curchorem and neighbouring areas on Monday handed over a memorandum to the Curchorem Police, demanding immediate action over increasing drugs-related incidents in Curchorem and surrounding areas.
A youth has threatened a hunger strike if the issue is not brought under control.
In their memorandum, a group of concerned citizens led by Aditya Dessai, Abhay Dessai, Vinesh Prabhudessai, Adv Amar Naik, Vikas Bhagat and N V Vaidya expressed grave concern over increasing incidents of availability of narcotic substances in the area which could possibly pose a severe threat on the law and order situation in the locality.
They wondered as to how the drugs had been reaching internal villages and towns located several kms away from major towns and coastal belt areas.
The group called on the police to intensify patrolling and surveillance in the hotspots which are known for the nefarious activities, as this would deter drug peddlers from visiting these areas for fear of the presence of policemen.
They also called on the police in plain clothes to make frequent visits to these sites and to conduct immediate raids and crackdown on drug peddlers on the border areas.
Abhay Dessai, one of the signatories to the memorandum, threatened to go on hunger strike outside the Curchorem Police Station if the authorities fail to take desired steps in the matter.
