RDA Minister and Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha inaugurated door-to-door garbage collection which will be taken up in a segregated manner in Cortalim-Quelossim Panchayat.
Speaking on the occasion, Saldanha appealed to the villagers to join hands and cooperate with the panchayat so that Cortalim-Quelossim can be model panchayat for the rest of the State to emulate making the two villages garbage-free.
“It is time for everyone in the State to join hands to revert Goa back to its original state of cleanliness and beauty by each one of us behaving as responsible citizens,” appealed Saldanha.
Cortalim ZP member Antonio Vaz appealed to the villages to abide by the rules and regulations of waste collection and segregation so that the panchayat can be successful in achieving its goal of a garbage-free panchayat.
Cortalim Church Parish Priest Fr Diogo Fernandes, while thanking the MLA for her contribution towards keeping the villages clean and hygienic requested the people to give up habits of littering like dumping garbage along the roads and focusing only on cleanliness of their home. “It is time we look at Goa as our home and keep it clean,” Fr Fernandes said.
Local medical practioner, Dr Suraj Kanekar, impressed upon the audience the need to protect environment and keep it garbage-free, especially the fields which lose its capacity to grow when littered with plastic.
Cortalim-Quelossim Sarpanch Hilario Figueiredo thanked the MLA for her role in restarting door-to-door garbage collection in Cortalim-Quelossim. He called upon the people of these two villages to support the efforts of the panchayat and make the campaign to villages garbage-free.
Panch Anita Kenkre while compering the programme said special attention has to be given to migrants who are mostly responsible for littering garbage all over and requested the house owners to provide all facilities to them so that they do not litter in the village.
Deputy Sarpanch Merciana Vaz proposed the vote of thanks.
