Three occupants in a car had a lucky escape when a bison rammed into their moving car at Amone-Poinguinim on Friday afternoon.
While the three occupants escaped unhurt, the bison is reported to have sustained injuries in the incident.
According to reports, the incident took place at about 2 pm as Aniket Velip was driving his car along with two other passengers from Amone towards Canacona.
Velip claimed that all of a sudden, a large bison appeared on the road from nowhere and charged towards the car.
Velip noticed the bison and slowed down the car, but the bison first rammed into one side of the car, before turning and ramming into the bonnet.
Velip said the bison then climbed on the car and sat on the bonnet.
The terrified occupants remained inside the car as the bison refused to get off the vehicle, Velip started the car and moved slowly.
The slow movement prompted the bison to get off the vehicle.
According to Velip, his car’s front wind shield glass was broken, while the bonnet and two doors on one side were damaged.
Locals fear wounded bison
could now target them
CANACONA:
With the bison sustaining injuries after ramming into a car at Amone-Poinguinim, locals fear that the injured bison could now target them.
Speaking to reporters, a village elder said it is not unusual to see bison and other wild animals in the locality.
“However, since the last few months, people returning to the village at night have reported sighting a huge bison in the middle of the road and staring menacingly at the people. But the bison slowly moves away whenever a vehicle approaches the site,” said the village elder.
“The bison has never attacked anyone till today’s incident.”
Locals are, however, worried that the injured bison may now attack people in the locality.
“This is cause for concern. There is no bus service to our locality and we have to either walk or travel on two-wheelers to go for work, drop our children to school,” remarked another resident.
Incidentally, Amone ward, which is part of the revenue village of Poinguinim Panchayat, comes under the wildlife protected area of Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary.
