A woman had a lucky escape on Tuesday evening when a portion of a house at Bamonsai-Sanguem got damaged after the retaining wall of the adjacent house collapsed in the heavy rain.
The house owner, Gabriel Fernandes, said the incident took place at around 7 pm when his mother had gone for a bath. “On hearing a loud noise, my mother rushed out of the bathroom in time, otherwise a major tragedy would have occurred,” claimed Fernandes.
Immediately after the incident, SMC Chairperson Romualdo Fernandes along with other government officials visited the site to take stock of the situation.
A fire brigade also went to the site of incident to clear the debris. Incidentally, Fernandes had complained to the Chief Officer of Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) in 2017, alleging that the compound wall had been illegally constructed and had feared that it could collapse on his house at some time.
“However, then SMC CO Pramod Desai claimed there had been nothing
wrong in the construction of the compound wall. Had Dessai acted, today’s incident would not have occurred.”
