Luizinho pins hope on govt to stop sewage discharge

Asserting that the God-gifted River Sal and the Salpem lake faces environmental degradation by rampant sewage disposal, Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro on Saturday hoped and prayed that the sewage problem plaguing Margao and its outskirts is solved at the earliest with the thousands of crores of JICA funds paid to consultants including Louis Berger.

“Rampant raw sewage discharge has contaminated the River Sal. Sewage has also affected the Salpem lake, which has been a great gift of God for the people of Salcete. This lake is the reservoir for all rain water from Margao. It is a hotbed of ecology and environment, birds, flora and fauna. But, today you put your leg in Salpem and one is not sure you will not come out without any sickness,” he told the media at his Navelim office on Saturday.
Asserting that de-silting of the River Sal will alone not solve the ills plaguing the river, Faleiro demanded that the government go to the root cause behind the problem by identifying the sources of the sewage. “I am not criticising anyone because criticising will not help address the issue. I have already asked the government to immediately look after the sewage plant at Sirvodem and commission the plants under construction,” he said.
Seeking suggestions and opinions from NGOs and villagers and all those who are passionately involved in protecting the ecology and farmland, Faleiro called upon the government to appoint in architects to help in the beautification of the Salpem lake, so that the lake is restored to its pristine glory and where people can go and spend time and watch the migratory birds.
He appealed to Navelkars to help him in his mission to make Navelim clean, green and healthy, while disclosing plans to revive agriculture and farming in the constituency. “I have decided to revive the Rosary Farmers Cooperative Society for farmers and will hold farmers camps to give a boost for agriculture in the constituency,” he said.
