Maha agency offers help to manage Sonsodo garbage

MARGAO
A Maharashtra-based agency has offered to help the Margao Municipal Council to put systems in place for the effective handling of solid waste management.

The agency, which is assisting the Ponda Municipal Council in providing end-to-end solutions in solid waste management, held a power-point presentation in the civic body on Tuesday for the benefit of the councillors and civic officials.

Tushar Tongaonkar said the agency has offered to set up a solid waste management system for the Margao civic body whereby the council will be able to track the waste generated in the city, right from the source to the disposal stage.

“We will set up a system wherein the waste is collected from the source and transported to the unit for processing. The system would ensure that the waste does not pile up in the unit and add to the landfill. This is the intervention which we have offered to the civic body,” Tushar told the media after the presentation.

He pointed out that the agency has already shared the agency’s interventions in Ponda, which has been running successfully in the town.

Saying the agency is not involved in running the waste treatment plants, Tushar clarified that the agency will help the local body in tracking the waste, give social status for the workers engaged in solid waste handling and also increase the revenue for the civic body.

MMC Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said the agency was invited to make the power-point presentation after looking at its system in Ponda.

“It has offered to undertake a pilot project to track down the black spots and ensure that the garbage collected from the source goes to the endpoint,” the CO said, adding that the proposal will be forwarded to the Secretary Urban Development if the same gets the nod from the council.

MMC Chairperson was also present at the programme.

Will AICC in-charge Goa desk Dinesh Gundu Rao bring insome news to Congressmen on the leadership tangle when he descends on the stateon his three-day visit beginning Wednesday.

While GPCC Vice-president M K Sheikh said the AICCin-charge will have interactive sessions with the various block committeesduring the three-day visit, Congress leaders demanding a change in GPCCleadership wondered whether any purpose will be served by Gundu’s visit whenthe leadership question remains unresolved till date.

In fact, a Congress leader rooting for a change in GPCCleadership said the party high command should first address the leadershipissue, saying other issues, including strengthening and building the party fromthe grassroots, will fall in place automatically.

“I feel that interactions will not bring in the desiredresults unless the party high command addresses the core leadership issue.Postponing the crucial issue indefinitely will not help the party in the longrun,” the leader warned.

Another leader pointed out that the high command shouldnot keep the state leaders and the party rank and file guessing on theleadership issue. “If the high command is in favour of maintaining status quoon leadership, it should say so without any further delay. Keeping the partyrank and file guessing for days and months will do more harm than good for theparty,” the leader said.

Meanwhile, M K Sheik said the AICC in-charge will visitSanguem and hold interactions with the Congress functionaries at Gurukul Hall, near police station, Sanguem at 11 am on Thursday. On the same day, he willvisit Curchorem and hold interactions at block office at 5 pm and will latermeet Quepem Block at Mallikarjan Hall, Balli, at 6.30 pm.

Later in the day, they will meet workers ofVelim Block at Loyola Furtado Library Hall, Chinchinim, at 4 pm and CuncolimBlock at Maddicotto Multipurpose Hall, Cuncolim, at 5.30 pm.

MARGAO: Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco on Tuesday dashed off a letter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant with a plea not to treat the Sonsodo garbage dump issue as trivial.

Saying the Sonsodo issue is a time bomb waiting to explode, the MLA said it will have a disastrous impact not only on the lives and health of the people but also wreak unimaginable destruction of the ecology, not only of Curtorim, but also beyond.

He said residents of Curtorim and surrounding areas are dejected. “People opine that their government is least interested in resolving the Sonsodo garbage issue permanently even after giving an assurance on the floor of the House.
