MARGAO
Social activist and mahajan of Ramnath Temple, Dattaram T Nayak has demanded that the government scrap the present devasthan regulations and draft new ones by taking all the mahajans of the temple into confidence.
Flanked by activist Felix Dias, Dattaram alias Mahesh Nayak told the media that presently not a single devastahan in Goa is following the present devastahan regulations as these are outdated, adding that many a devasthan is at the forefront in indulging in illegalities and irregularities to the detriment of the devasthan.
“Due to the outdated devasthan regulations, the respective mahajans and managing committees are at loggerheads with each other as a result of which many cases are pending before the respective Administrative Tribunal and the High Court,” he said.
Saying that the present regulations published in the year 1861 were too old to meet the needs of the present times. Nayak said changes to the devasthan regulations are required in an era of internet and social media.
“The new regulations are all the more necessary in view of the fact that there’s no accountability vis-Ã -vis the accounts of the devasthan. There’s no audited accounts and there’s no transparency. The managing committee runs the show for three years”, he said, while suggesting that the government should appoint auditors to audit the accounts of the devasthans.
