The Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) has commenced the construction of proposed indoor stadium for the upcoming National Games at Poinguinim.
Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the indoor stadium.
Speaking on the occasion, Tawadkar emphasised that almost every assurances he gave during the last elections would be fulfilled in the next few days and as much as Rs 44 crore-sports infrastructure was becoming a reality before the State goes for next assembly elections.
The Poinguinim stadium is being constructed at a cost of Rs 24.12 crore along with three other sports arenas in the State, totally worth Rs 128 crore as preparations for the upcoming National Games.
Wrestling and Archery are the two disciplines allotted to Poinguinim stadium in view of the National Games which are likely to be held in November-December 2017 or January 2018.
The Poinguinim stadium constructed in an area of 19,534.66 sq-mt of land will have a built-up area of 3,260 sq-mt, platform (392 sq-mt with a height of approximately 132 m), providing accomodation/spectators gallery for 44 persons, VIPs, athletes and officials.
The stadium will also have an open space of 16,800 sq-mt and at any given time accommodate 70 vehicles in the car park arena. The stadium is built for holding Wrestling and Archery of National Games, its future indoor and outdoor facilities will be wrestling, badminton, table tennis, judo, taekwando, cricket, football and other outdoor games.
The construction works have been awarded at an amount of Rs 24.12 crore against the estimated cost of Rs 21.50 crore to M/s Harsh Construction Pvt Ltd, Mumbai. LKS India Pvt Ltd, Panaji are the project consultants.
ZP Poinguinim Dr Pushpa Aiya, Poinguinim Sarpanch Vallabh Tengse, Deputy Sarpanch Archana Painginkar, panchas, sarpanchas Puno Gaonkar (Gaondongrim), Prashant Dessai (Shristhal ), three Canacona councillors, SAG treasurer Arun Bhat, SAG Supdt engineer H M Ranghuraju, executive engineer (South) Ankush Gaonkar and others were present.
