Maharashtra sand trucks stopped at Old Goa

OLD GOA
Irate sand transporters stopped several trucks from Maharashtra, which were used for transporting sand from Kudal on the Old Goa bypass road on Friday.

The local sand transporters alleged there were no documents with the drivers for transporting the sand.

“Everyday, around 400 trucks from Maharashtra enter Goa with sand illegally extracted from places like Kudal,” complained Surendra Volvoikar, one of the sand transporters, while speaking to The Goan.

“We were keeping watch on the movement of these trucks and on Friday, we were able to intercept some of them at Old Goa. When we asked the drivers to produce documents pertaining to transportation of sand, they were unable to do so,” stated Volvoikar, while alleging that the sand transportation was carried out illegally.

“We called up the police as well as the collector’s office but nobody turned up to take action against the illegal transportation. Later, the drivers made good their escape by dumping the sand along the roadside,” Volvoikar informed.
