MAPUSA
A 24-year-old maid from Salvador-do-Mundo, who allegedly committed theft of cheques and encashed Rs 1.70 lakh from her aged employer, was arrested on Thursday, Mapusa Police informed.
The accused maid, Yamini Nagvenkar, was arrested for pinching four bearer cheques from the safe of the house of Clara Faria (85) where she was employed.
Police said Clara Faria and Agnes Britto, both relatives, were residing in the house in Morod-Mapusa.
When Britto passed away in August last year, her UK-based son and daughter-in-law appointed Marlene D'Souza, who was a family friend, as the caretaker of octogenarian, Clara Faria.
D'Souza hired the maid through the Goa House Maid, an organisation which rents maids.
The family also had a private accountant who looked after the finances of the family in Goa and had kept four bearer cheques in a locked safe in the house.
When the private accountant visited the house on January 6, he found the cheques missing and accordingly informed the caretaker.
After inquiries, it was found that the four cheques amounting to Rs 1.70 lakh were withdrawn from the bank.
In her complaint to police, the caretaker said between December 5 and January 2, four cheques went missing from the safe.
They doubted the maid since she had gone on 10 days leave.
When confronted, the maid admitted to the theft and was handed over to the police.
The accused maid was arrested under Section 381 of IPC and is presently cooling her heels behind bars. PSI, Richa Bhosle is investigating the case.
